چکیده

We present a framework to study control systems with feedback loops closed over wireless communication links. We show the choice of communication parameters can greatly affect the performance of such systems. The trade-offs of data rate, time delay and packet loss in the communication link layer design are illustrated with a numerical example of an inverted pendulum. Packet loss is shown to significantly degrade performance, which is not surprising since the controller design does not take into account random packet losses in the feedback loop. We thus propose an analog soft-decoding communication link design that does not incur any packet losses. It is shown that, for low channel gains, the control system closed over a soft-decoding communication link performs better than the same system closed over a hard-decoding communication link with optimal selection of sample period and data rate. This suggests fundamental changes in wireless link designs may be necessary to support robust distributed control systems.

Outlier Detection in Wireless Sensor Networks Using Distributed Principal Component Analysis

Detecting anomalies is an important challenge for intrusion detection and fault diagnosis in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). To address the problem of outlier detection in wireless sensor networks, in this paper we present a PCA-based centralized approach and a DPCA-based distributed energy-efficient approach for detecting outliers in sensed data in a WSN. The outliers in sensed data can be ca...

MLCA: A Multi-Level Clustering Algorithm for Routing in Wireless Sensor Networks

Energy constraint is the biggest challenge in wireless sensor networks because the power supply of each sensor node is a battery that is not rechargeable or replaceable due to the applications of these networks. One of the successful methods for saving energy in these networks is clustering. It has caused that cluster-based routing algorithms are successful routing algorithm for these networks....

System-level Energy Tradeoffs for Collaborative Computation in Wireless Networks∗

Energy is a critical performance metric in collaborative and distributed wireless networks. An integrated approach that considers system-level energy tradeoffs (such as communication versus computation energy) is essential for energy efficient application development in these networks. In this paper, we present a system-level model for estimating the energy dissipation in these networks, and di...
